Definition of Gallbladder Pain
Gallbladder pain may be described as any pain that is triggered by gallbladder disease. The pain will occur in conjunction with other symptoms of the condition.
Symptoms of Gallbladder Disease
The symptoms of gallbladder disease may be classified by the manifestation of the disease. There are three primary groups that are used to define the associated symptoms.
Biliary Colic
Biliary colic is thought to be the most widespread symptom of gallbladder disease and is generally presented as sporadic pain that is felt in the centre or right portion of the upper abdomen. The symptoms may be different in individuals afflicted with the condition but in general any of the following symptoms may be evident.
• The primary symptom is normally described as a sharp pain in the upper right abdomen just beneath the rib cage. It is likely tobe so severe that it is felt in the upper area of the back. It is not exceptional for an individual to also feel some pain underneath the breast bone when struck by this condition.
• The pain will be unyielding even after taking over-the-counter pain reducers, after switching position and/or passing gas.
• The pain will normally start at a particular time of day, but it is not likely to materialize more than once per week
• The condition remedies itself after many hours. If the pain is still apparent after a twenty four hour period it is probable that it may actually be acute cholecystitis or a more detrimental condition.
• It may also be associated with some degree of nausea and/or vomiting.
• The symptoms may manifest once again even after they have stopped. In certain situations it may take years to experience another attack.
Acute cholecystitis (Gallbladder Inflammation)
Some 3% of people having the symptoms of gallbladder disease will be subjected to inflammation. This will manifest because of an impediment in the duct by gallstones or sludge. The symptoms closely resemble those that accompany biliary colic but are customarilyunending and will result in more pronounced pain. The symptoms of acute cholecystitis may include:
• Serious pain in the the upper right abdomen that is incessant and that continues for many days. The pain is typically made worse upon inhalation.
• Nausea and vomiting typicallyaccompany these sudden attacks.
• The pain may also move to the back or may be evident in the shoulder blades. It is occasionally felt underneath the breast bone or on the left side of the body.
• About one third of individualswill experience fever and chills.
As soon as a person is afflicted with these symptoms prompt medical assessment is necessary. Gangrene and perforation of the gallbladder may develop if it is not dealt with quickly. About 20% of people with the condition will develop an infection. For diabetics the complete risk of complication is remarkably higher.
Blockage in the gallbladder because of gallstones
If gallstones become lodged in the common bile duct they will obstruct the duct reducing effective operation of the organ. Symptoms will manifest that are almost identical to those that occur when stones are present in the gallbladder. It will occur in association with jaundice, fever and chills, and heart palpitations among other symptoms.
