Here are five top tips for extending your battery life:
1. Dim your screen as low as you can. Brightness sucks up power at a horrible rate.
2. Unplug USB devices and empty the CD/DVD drive. Any extra hardware that your computer has to power while it's running off laptop battery will use up the charge unnecessarily.
3. Shut down as many programs as possible. In the age of semi-perpetual hibernation, it's easy to forget that there are programs running in the background of the computer. These all use up power and should be shut down when you're running on batteries.
4. Keep the activity low. This means that if you are using a program like Word, you should turn off the autosave function when your battery is full. Turn it back on when the battery gets low, though, to remove the danger of losing work when it dies.
5. Avoid standby. The standby function is handy, but consumes more power. If you really don't want to lose everything you have open, hibernate the computer for more efficient use of laptop batteries.
Keeping the battery for your laptop up-to-date and carrying a spare are two other ways to extend your portability. Have a look at our replacement laptop battery section here at Laptop Power UK when you want to make the best use of your laptop's mobility.
