Roasting coffee at home is not a new idea, but is increasing in popularity as the true coffee lover wants better control over what they drink. A cheap and inexpensive way to roast green coffee beans in confines of your own home is by using a hot air popcorn popper. There are two common makes of popcorn poppers to accomplish this with. The first and most popular make is the west Bend Poppery model. This model puts out 1500 watts of power and is the most popular popper of choice by the home coffee popcorn popper roasting community. This model is now discontinued, but can still be found on eBay, at garage sales or even in your parent’s cupboards. West Bend also puts out a Poppery II model that uses 1200 watts and will suffice as well. Another popular make is the Nostalgia Electrics Hot Air Popcorn Popper. This old-fashioned looking popcorn maker is a plastic replica of old timey, street corner popcorn stand of the early 1900s, only in table-top size. This popper puts out 1080 watts of power and is great for a beginning home coffee roaster.
Roasting green coffee in a popcorn popper only takes about 15 minutes time from setup to finish and the mess is minimal and well worth it. Roasting is preferably done outside, but can be done in your own kitchen if the right precautions are taken. Green coffee beans can be purchased by the pound and comes from various regions of the world. Most can be bought off of the internet or even on the eBay. If you want to take more control of the coffee you drink, you should look into the fun hobby of roasting coffee at home; you will give yourself a great sense of accomplishment and a superb tasting cup of coffee to boot.
