When people bring up the topic of landscaping, most people have the idea of the first grass being laid down when a house in built, or someone going outside and planting a few flowers. Landscaping encompasses so much more than that. It is an all encompassing art with a core in science. In fact, a new trend has started in the last 10 years called landscape urbanism. This concept takes into consideration existing landscaping, and from there, believes that the urban area can be determined by landscape over buildings.

This is very important as we see more and more people moving away from the urban core and the growth of urban sprawl. By focusing on the concept of Landscape Urbanism, the planning of the entire community would work around existing landscape features, such as lakes and hills. Let’s take for example, Minneapolis, MN. For a job that is required to landscape Minneapolis, MN, there will have to be a good deal of planning, before the subject of buildings can even be broached.

So the landscape architect who is hired for the job of landscaping Minneapolis, MN, would have to assess the area where things were going to be built. From there, he would design around the environment. If there are lakes, like the Chain of Lakes, the architect may want to create a similar park with similar activities, such as boating, swimming, fishing and skating. If there is a way to include a golf course, and have homes built around the golf course, this would be part of what needs to be considered while you try to landscape Minneapolis, MN.

There has been a lot of history to consider when you want to landscape Minneapolis, MN. Early in the city’s history, renowned landscape architect Horace Cleveland set the standard very high. He used existing natural features, and created some of the most beautiful and useful parks. The oldest wildflower and bird sanctuary is located in Theodore Wirth Park, which is substantial in size. Minnehaha Park holds Minnehaha Falls, which were immortalized in Wadsworth poem “The Song of Hiawatha”, when he named Hiawatha’s wife Minnehaha.

This tradition has continued on due to the standards set so many years ago. Old railway lines and bridges have been converted to bike paths and bridges. In all actuality there are over 90 miles of bicycle trails which are used by more commuters than any other city in the United States, save one. Winter isn’t even enough to scare off the hard core cyclists. According to Forbes, Minneapolis is the fifth cleanest city in the entire world. One can only say that the foresight that was considered when they had to landscape Minneapolis, MN, is what is responsible for at least a portion of the award.

All in all, Minneapolis has had a long tradition of landscape architects that have had made their mark on the world. The planners of Minneapolis had the foresight to utilize the concept of landscape urbanism over 100 years before it became popular. That alone shows the level of landscape architecture to be found in the Midwest.
