Domain name registration is when you reserve a certain website address for use with your website. Most of these are formatted as follows: http://www.example.com (where "example" would be replaced by whatever you choose).

Domain names may end with dot com (.com) but also could end with other suffixes such as: .net, .biz, .ws, .org, and so on.

The reason it's necessary to register your domain name is so that it will officially be recognized online as the only site with that exact name (and address). It's very similar to how a phone company sets up a phone number for you when you sign up for phone service. They need to add your phone number to a centralized database that assigns that phone number to you and only you, so that no one else may use that number and to ensure that all calls to that number will be directed to your phone.

In the same sense, a domain registration company (officially called a registrar) does this with domain names. It gives you and only you access to assign a website to a certain address. You get to choose what people see when they visit that address, and you can change it at any time.

One way to use your registered domain is to have a website created and designed, uploaded to a web host, and then configured through your registrar to appear when people type in your registered website address (domain).

Another way to use a domain you have purchased is to create what is called a redirect. Let’s say that you are running a company and you want multiple website addresses to direct visitors to the same exact site. All you do is sign into your registrar and access the configuration under each domain name registration. Simply set it up so that when someone types in any alternate web address you have chosen, it keeps going back to the primary address you have selected.
