First off lawyers for the most part are bloody expensive and you usually require a lawyer in some of the more challenging times in life. Combine these two things and stress is usually going to coincide with any legal experience. I have for mostly business reasons dealt with many lawyers over the years and have spent more money than I care to know. During those years I have made many mistakes and through those mistakes have earned valuable knowledge.
Here are a couple of tips on getting the most out of any legal experience:
The first and most important tip I can give you is be very detailed in what you are looking for. Convey this and have the lawyer repeat it so you know that they understand exactly what you are talking about. Always follow this up with an email that again is very detailed and outlines every point. Make sure they reply in agreement with every point made.
Next is make sure the lawyer that you have found is the best lawyer for the job, while price always needs to be considered trust me it isn't the most important aspect. Cheap lawyers often times can take longer to do the same job a more expensive lawyer would take. Given that time is money less per hour is not always going to be cheaper in the end.
Through research and referrals you need to identify that this lawyer has had experience in what you are trying to achieve. The internet is a great place to check up on people as a good web site will often convey what expertise the firm is targeting. The best way however is through word of mouth, whether that be another lawyer, business associate or friend.
Another tip is verifying with the lawyer that you're dealing with that they indeed have done an exact project like this before. I had one horrible experience where I was paying the lawyer to learn what they were doing. They had been referred as experts in their field and what we realized was we were looking for national experts and they were only experts within their state. When a lawyer is an expert in 1 state and you need professional work done for all 48 there is a bit of a difference. In the end this little mistake on my part cost me tens of thousands.
While I can very easily sit there and blame everything on the lawyer I was dealing with and I do blame most of it. I in the end I hired this person and honestly didn't do enough research. Research and finding good recommendations has to be the most important aspect of insuring you are going to get a good lawyer. Being as clear as possible about the work you require will end up insuring get the service you're looking for. In the end this will save you and potentially thousands!
Best of luck with your next legal experience and here is hoping it doesn't happen for a while.
