What's more, the Aussies are some of the most welcoming and laid back people you will ever meet.
Sydney is a city that manages to combine chic city-living with lazy beach life. You can surf on Bondi or the less crowded Coogie Beach, snap the Opera House and Harbour Bridge on a boat tour, head to the Sydney Football Stadium to watch an Aussie Rules match, or just relax with a cold beer at one of the city's many bars.
Melbourne is by no means second best to Sydney. This city packs a real punch when it comes to culture. It has outstanding museums, pretty parks, and beautiful Victorian architecture. Food is also superb because of the eclectic mix of cultures from Greek to Vietnamese, so your stomach is sure be satisfied and so is your wallet because it's cheap!
Australia has some of the most beautiful beaches on earth and Whitehaven Beach on the Whitsunday Islands is simply paradise on earth. You can go on sailing trips of one to three days from Airlie Beach and really explore the Great Barrier Reef Nature Reserve. This has to be at the top of the 'must-do' list when in Australia.
Backpackers love Frasier Island. It is the largest sand island in the world and you can spend three days here driving around in a 4-wheel drive and camping out in the open air and getting through a fair amount of booze and bar-b-ques. You can test the jeep along 75 mile beach to see how fast it can go, watch the tiger sharks from Indian Head and sunbathe by Lake McKenzie.
Byron Bay is Australia's hippy, surf town. Friendly takes on a whole new meaning here as people will strike up a conversation with a total stranger on the street and invite them for a beer. The surf is awesome, both for beginners and seasoned pros. Many people get stuck in this little slice of heaven so allow plenty of time to just soak up the atmosphere and the most amazing sunrises from Cape Byron lighthouse.
Queensland is where will find lush, tropical rainforest blended seamlessly with beautiful sandy beaches. The best place to admire this natural beauty is Cape Tribulation. You can stay in huts right in the midst of the rainforest. Just beware of the giant spiders, ants and general abundance of creepy crawlies.
If you like nature, and getting stuck into the outback, then a visit to the Atherton Tablelands should be on the list. This part of inland Northern Queensland is magical with waterfalls, springs, and streams strewn between the trees. Hire bikes, or just use your feet to explore this ancient World Heritage rainforest.
