Whatever you wish to achieve in your life, it is imperative for you to set your goal. Building castles in the air or day dreaming is no good if you really want to do something in your personal or professional life. What is required is SMART goal setting so that you can actually achieve what you want in life. So set your goals before you proceed with going after your dreams. Your goals have to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic as well as time bound. This approach of pursuing SMART goals has proved to be extremely successful. It helps you to set your objectives in a practical way and thus you are able to achieve what you want in life.

No matter if you want to achieve your personal or business goal, this philosophy is what helps all. To begin with, setting a specific goal is the first step. Just ask yourself what exactly you want to achieve. Be precise, do not rely on abstract goals as for example, one may set a goal to be successful but what is success? To different people this may have different implication. So you need to focus what success means to you. If it about getting the top position in your company, having all A’s in your college or losing 5 pounds in a month? Be specific and leave the abstract.

Measurable goals imply trying for something which you can evaluate. For example, if you wish to lose weight, you need to set the specific goal as to how many pounds you want to lose and then keep on gauging your progress on weekly/ monthly basis. But if your goal is to ‘lose weight’ without a measurable scale, it will not be a successful mission. In the same way, we need to have achievable goals. Whatever you wish to purse should be practically achievable as well or you will be simply wasting your time. Likewise, your goals ought to realistic; there is o good aiming of the stairs knowing they can never be achieved. If someone who wants to lose weight sets a goal of losing 10 pounds in a week, he is living in a dreamland and setting an unrealistic goal. So make sure your goals are not such.

Lastly your goals have to be time bound. Time is the factor which will determine the success of your achievement. If you set a goal of losing 5 pounds, but do not know in what period of time, you will not be able to be consistent. You may lose 5 pounds in a year or in six months in the absence of the goals which are not time bound. So make sure you set a time limit for achieving your goals.
