BINGO: A Game for the Young and the Young at Heart. Bingo is a simple game enjoyed by children from the ages of 3 to 103. Bingo is one of the most popular party games in North America, and generates over 90 million dollars a week. Bingo cards are sold with specialty themes ranging from Barbie Bingo to Bridal Shower Bingo. The game is commonly played in senior centres and retirement communities. Bingo is played in casinos and churches. It is a form of gambling and also a popular game for charity fundraisers. Though bingo is usually played as a social activity, you can now play bingo online from the privacy of your own home. Though Bingo is usually used for recreation it is also a tool for educators. Bingo cards are available for teaching mathematics, reading, and foreign languages. On these cards the numbers are replaced by words or mathematical problems.

Bingo is a game of chance, in which each player has equal odds of winning. Each player is given a card with a 5×5 grid. The games facilitator randomly calls numbers and each player marks their card if it contains the number that was called. The first card in which the marked numbers form a straight line wins the game and the winner shouts BINGO. Many times the games continue until a player has achieved “black out.” In order to win a “black out” the player must have every number on their card marked off. Both the bingo winner and the blackout winner receive a prize. Though Bingo can be traced back to an Italian Lottery in the 1500’s, the modern form was originated in the 1920’s at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia. Originally the game was called Beano, because beans were used as game markers. An excited winner who accidentally yelled Bingo changed the game forever. The new name stuck. Since that time this simple game has risen in popularity. It is now a household game that is played and enjoyed by young and old alike.
