The history of online casino games is very interesting. When online casinos began their evolution, the internet and all it entailed was still in its infancy stages. There was very little regulation of the internet, and people could visit or create whatever sites they wanted, with little or no regulation of content. Online gambling sites were no exception. In reviewing the history of online casinos, we can see how online gambling has evolved over the past two decades. In 1994, the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act was passed. This allowed online casino operators to become licensed through offshore betting sites in Antigua and Barbados. Today, many online casinos are still licensed through Antigua and Barbados, as it is one of the online gaming industry’s most popular licensing jurisdictions. In 1999, a United States Senator by the name of Jon Kyl, a Republican from Arizona, tried to restrict online gaming in the United States. He wanted to ban online casinos via the World Wide Web. It failed to pass in Congress, but it opened the eyes to the general public about the online gaming industry. In May of 2002, the first multi-million dollar jackpot was won by a player. At this point in the 21st century, online casinos have boomed, and online gambling expenditures had quadrupled from their expenditures just three years earlier.

By 2003, Congress had a small victory in terms of online gambling. They made it illegal to process online gambling payments via credit cards or bank wires. This act of Congress made it more difficult for people to gamble online, and began more intense reform of online gaming websites. Currently, at this point in 2008, the World Trade Organization is holding the United States to its earlier Antigua and Barbados licensing ties. The United States had tried to ban offshore gambling sites, with minimal success. The United States was found to be in the wrong regarding the earlier agreement about offshore gambling, and was forced to reconsider internet gaming sites. Internet gambling sites and online casinos have come a long way since they first started popping up in the 1990’s. Since then, online gaming sites have reported record-breaking revenues each year since their origin. The average amount a person spends on an online gaming site is estimated at $2300, an impressive amount, and nothing to be sneezed at. With the current success of online gaming websites, we can be sure we will see them flourish for a long time to come.
